Spraining an ankle is a fairly common injury.
But, a recent study showed that these injuries can have lifelong consequences.
The ankle, while essential for movement, is also quite fragile.
Prone to injury with a simple misstep, it was previously thought these injuries would heal within a few weeks.
But studies done at the University of North Carolina (Charlotte) proved different.
Students who suffered chronic ankle instability moved significantly less than other students.
Similar tests were done in animals with the same findings.
The upshot of these studies is that folks should take an ankle sprain seriously.
A visit to the MD or physical therapist is warranted.
