Becoming healthy is not just a matter of dropping pounds. Just as important is a healthy diet. Here’s some DIY cooking tricks and tips to help you on your way.
1. Eat At Home
Eating at home saves you calories AND cash. Restaurant food tends to have lots of sodium (which retains water) and calories. Cooking helps connect your mind with your body. When you prepare your food, you know with what ingredients you’ll be nourishing your body.
2. Stock Your Kitchen
Keeping basic ingredients on hand helps you not call your favorite pizza place when your appetite surges. Some common ingredients include: a variety of fresh fruits and veggies, frozen veggies, herbs/spices, whole grain pasta, rice, low – fat cuts of meat (poultry) that are fresh and frozen, and chicken or vegetable stock.
3. Plan Ahead, Prep Ahead
Make your menu ahead of time and prep your ingredients. That includes cleaning/chopping veggies and cutting up your meat (when applicable.) Make a stock to use as a soup and prepare a basic marinara sauce that you can freeze. Cook a large batch of beans that you can use in soup or chili. Wash and cut up fruit for a quick snack.
5. Let’s Not Forget Dessert
You can’t go wrong with fruit. But, know your fruit, as some contain high amounts of sugar. Consider grilling your fruit and serving with a small scoop of ice cream or making a apple crisp in the microwave. (Microwave some chopped apple pieces and sprinkle with cinnamon. Serve with a sprinkle of rolled oats and sugar.)
