You think you’re doing your body a favor by watching what you eat. But, you may be very surprised to find these “healthy” foods are not so healthy after all.
1. Fruit Juices
So many people grew up starting their day with a glass of fruit juice. Although some may have some fruit in them, most a lot contain a lot of sugar. In fact, some orange juice contain the same amount of sugar as Coke.
2. Whole Wheat
While whole wheat is healthier than refined wheat, it’s still not that good. Why? It’s high in gluten. Those with gluten sensitivities can suffer damage to their digestive tract, pain, bloating, and fatigue.
3. Agave Nectar
Not too long ago, we kept hearing about how great agave was as a sweetener. Why? It has a natural low glycemic index. But, it also is very high in fructose. This type of sugar is metabolized by the liver. When a fructose overload occurs, the sugar turns to fat. In particular, it can cause a host of metabolic issues.
4. Sports Drinks
These are called “sport” drinks because they really were designed for athletes. High in sugar, water and electrolytes, they are exactly what an athlete requires. But, it’s not what the average person needs.
5. Vegetable Oils That Are Deemed “Heart Healthy
A few years ago we learned just how bad saturated fat was for us. So, manufacturers developed “healthier” vegetable oils. Some of these are corn, cottonseed and soybean oils. The problem is that these are created through a harsh process that can even include toxic ingredients. The result is that these oils contain large amounts of Omega-6 fatty acids. This can cause inflammation and other damage to cells.
6. Fat Free Or Low Fat Foods
Manufacturers were quick to realize that removing the fat from food really hurt the taste. So, they were quick to add sugar and other chemicals to improve the taste.
7. Margarine And “Fake” Butters
In short, butter is healthier than margarine. Why? Margarine and other similar products are processed foods that can contain a lot of harmful ingredients. Grass fed butter, in particular, is a much better choice.
8. Energy Bars
Similar to sport drinks, a lot of people who eat these don’t need them. Energy and protein bars are highly processed and often contain very unhealthy ingredients: sugar, white flour and artificial flavor.
9. Low Carb Junk Food
Carbs are often considered a forbidden food. Manufacturers were quick to notice and started making low carb junk food. These are often filled with highly processed ingredients that are very unhealthy.
10. “Healthy” Breakfast Cereals
Most breakfast cereals are highly processed. Filled with the worst kind of carbs and lots of sugar, they are a terrible food to eat at any time of the day. No matter what the box says (“low/fat-free” or “whole grain”), they’re often filled with harmful ingredients.
