It strengthens your heart and lungs, and increases the utilization of oxygen.

By moving your large muscles (ie: arms, legs, and hips), your heart rate increases, sending the blood faster back and forth from these muscles to the lungs.
The effect is immediate.
Even the smallest of blood vessels (capillaries) will widen, carrying oxygen to to the muscles and removing waste products.
