A new study suggests that one minute of vigorous exercise has the same benefits as 45 minutes of moderate exercise, weight loss included!
1.The Idea Is Backed By Science
Nine sedentary young men were asked to do one minute of high-intensity cycling on a stationary bike 3 times a week for 12 weeks. Each minute included three 20 second bursts of maximum effort, with a 2 minute recovery period of moderate intensity cycling in between. The second group of 10 men cycled for 45 minutes of continuous, moderate cycling. There were 6 who did not exercise at all.
2.The Results Were Surprising
Both groups who cycled made comparable gains in their blood sugar, improved endurance and muscle function. There were also similar weight loss and calorie burning results.
3.This Is The Premise Behind High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT)
More researchers are studying how much exercise you have to undergo to see a positive change. However, there are also benefits for longer exercise regiments. The improved blood flow through the arteries is important. Regardless, anyone thinking of undergoing HIIT should check with their MD first.
