Web junkies start early these days … some before they can even start talking. Are you raising one? Or, are you a web junkie yourself?
1. Too Much Screen Time Now A Clinical Disorder
Doctors in China were alarmed at the rate kids are using screen time. So much so, that rehabilitation centers have now been established for these kids.
2. “Web Junkie”
This documentary follows the lives of several kids who become so addicted to video games that they forgo sleep, bathroom breaks or eating.
3. It’s Not Yet Considered An Illness In The US … Yet
But, American parents would be wise to take notice. It often starts young, as kids are handed cell phones (or tablets) by their parents. The TV has now been replaced with a multitude of screens … and (unfortunately) many parents welcome the silence.
4. The Negative Effects Are Real
These children suffer in their school performance, health and behavior. Studies have shown they do not really understand the violence they are repeatedly seeing. Some kids lose their sense of apathy.
5. What Can Parents Do?
Limiting screen time is not enough. Parents must ensure their children are getting enough physical exercise. Gear the workouts toward what your children like: individual bodywork, team sports, or cycling. Even better, lead by example and exercise with your child.
